EPSDT All individuals with disabilities under the age of 21 who qualify for medicaid (including those who qualify for medicaid on state waiver or deeming programs) are automatically covered by a federal program called EPSDT (Early Periodic, Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment). According to the Federal guidelines, EPSDT must provide any service your child’s physician says is “medically necessary,” from in-home skilled nursing, to various therapy services to assistive devices. This requirement includes services which are not normally paid for under medicaid, and even includes travel and lodging if you must take your child someplace for specialist medical care. If you are not aware of all your child’s rights to medical care under EPSDT, this article, prepared by Neighborhood Legal Services, Inc. is a wonderful starting point for your research. Many states include information on EPSDT on their state department of health web sites as well, but since the services are federally mandated, they are really identical from one state to another.
